The Sainsbury’s Origin Pick Project is an ACS innovation, which we undertook as part of our ongoing relationship with Sainsbury’s. It was a ground-breaking project that revolutionised the way Sainsbury’s flow general merchandise product into the UK from overseas sourcing locations. We’re pleased to say, we’re not the only ones to think so: earlier this month, we scooped a Supply Chain Excellence award and last week we won the Supply Chain Partnership Award at the Global Freight Awards.
The Global Freight Awards pay tribute to high achievers in freight and logistics and celebrates the expertise of one of the world’s most important industries. The award organisers commented: “The calibre of entrants was extremely high this year, proving a challenging task for our esteemed judges.”
The award-winning Origin Pick Project is an end-to-end integrated systems platform that connects Allport Cargo Services and Sainsbury’s at each step from purchase placement through to store delivery. We pick the products at multiple overseas origins and pack it ready for delivery to each individual store. The operation was conducted in five locations: Mumbai, Colombo, Hong Kong, Ningbo and Yantian.
Together, we coordinated a staggering 14,821 pallets with 632,000 cases of products from 42 different suppliers representing 258 skus in 932 containers which arrived in the UK on 8 different vessels over two weeks into Felixstowe. Shipments arrived in the UK in December 2013 for cross-docking and delivery direct to store.
The success of the programme for the January sale 2014 enabled Sainsbury’s to sign-off eight further events this year. Sainsbury’s achieved multiple benefits as a result of our designed and managed origin pick programme. The programme was designed to principally improve product flow and reduce UK logistics handling costs – both of which were achieved through operational delivery. The logistics saving achieved through handling two million cases represents a 21% reduction in end-to-end cost per case.
